A small but excellent fact

Walter Hunt patented the modern safety pin in 1849. Its clever trick is that the same piece of wire forms the point, spring and protective clasp, which is a lot of engineering hiding inside something tiny. Another rabbit hole starts here: Velcro was inspired by burrs. Swiss engineer George de Mestral examined the plant hooks that clung to clothing and his dog's fur, then developed a reusable hook-and-loop fastener based on the same idea.
