The first electric traffic signal appeared in Cleveland in 1914. It used red and green lights; yellow was added to many later systems because drivers needed a warning between stop and go. The next fact takes a different route: Mary Anderson patented an early windshield-wiper design in 1903 after noticing how awkward it was for drivers to clear snow and rain from the glass by hand.
