Arcade & Classic Games · 53

Arcade sound effects had to cut through real room noise, which helps explain why classic machines are full of short, sharp tones that remain recognizable decades later. History got weird here

Frogger turned crossing a road into arcade drama in 1981. Cars, logs, turtles and a time limit proved that a daily nuisance could become a perfect videogame premise. Another tiny history lesson: Asteroids also used vector graphics, which gave its rocks and ships razor-sharp outlines on black. The minimalist look was partly technology and partly instant visual identity.
