A combo is partly execution and partly route planning: players choose not only what connects, but what leaves the best position when the sequence ends. The history behind the category adds another layer: Telegraphing is the art of making a dangerous attack readable before it happens; the larger the punishment, the more important that warning usually becomes. A parry is the game politely asking whether you would like to bet everything on one moment.

One strange fact

Street Fighter II's combo system grew from an animation-timing quirk discovered during development. Because chaining attacks together was difficult but fun rather than game-breaking, the behavior stayed—and became a foundation of the genre. The next fact takes a different route: Double Dragon hit arcades in 1987 and helped popularize two-player cooperative beat-'em-up action. Having a friend beside you was useful right up until the game gave both players a reason to fight each other at the end.
