A leaderboard changes a solo challenge into asynchronous competition: another player can become your rival without ever being online at the same moment. The design side has its own twist: Consistent physics matter more than realistic physics here. Players can master strange gravity if the game behaves the same way every attempt. The phrase 'I pressed it' is the national anthem of difficult timing games.

A quick detour

Pool and billiards reward 'position play': the clever shot is often not just the one that sinks a ball, but the one that leaves the cue ball in a useful place for the next shot. One more curious detail: Skee-Ball was patented in 1908. Rolling a ball up a ramp into scoring rings looks simple, but the combination of speed, angle and bounce turns a carnival machine into a surprisingly precise little physics problem.
