Skee-Ball was patented in 1908. Rolling a ball up a ramp into scoring rings looks simple, but the combination of speed, angle and bounce turns a carnival machine into a surprisingly precise little physics problem. One more for the mental shelf: Kendama looks like a wooden ball tied to a stick with cups, yet advanced players can link catches, spikes and balance tricks into long routines. The toy became especially standardized and popular in Japan during the twentieth century.
