Checkpoint placement changes difficulty more than it first appears; the same obstacle feels harsher when every mistake also repeats a long easy section. Another angle makes it more interesting: Ghost replays turn improvement into evidence. Instead of guessing whether you are faster, you can watch your current attempt physically overtake the old one. After enough attempts, a level stops looking like scenery and starts looking like a schedule.

Wait, really?

Many rhythm games judge inputs in tiny timing windows around a musical beat. The difference between 'perfect' and 'good' can be only a few dozen milliseconds. Another thing that sounds made up but is not: Skee-Ball was patented in 1908. Rolling a ball up a ramp into scoring rings looks simple, but the combination of speed, angle and bounce turns a carnival machine into a surprisingly precise little physics problem.
