Checkpoint placement changes difficulty more than it first appears; the same obstacle feels harsher when every mistake also repeats a long easy section. The player-facing version of the idea is simple: Difficulty curves work best when they remix known ideas; a new obstacle is easier to learn if one part of it already feels familiar.
