Fitts's law, published in the 1950s, describes a basic pointing truth: small distant targets take longer to acquire than large nearby ones. There is a practical reason this matters in games: Short restart times protect motivation; when failure lasts half a second, 'one more try' is almost frictionless. A perfect run is mostly a collection of mistakes that did not happen this time.

A fact with good replay value
A metronome was originally a musician’s timing tool, not a game accessory. Rhythm games effectively turn the same idea into an interactive score challenge. A second detour: Skee-Ball was patented in 1908. Rolling a ball up a ramp into scoring rings looks simple, but the combination of speed, angle and bounce turns a carnival machine into a surprisingly precise little physics problem.
