Shooting Games · 3

Midway's Gun Fight from 1975 was the first arcade video game to use a microprocessor, a hardware change that helped make more complex animation practical. The design side has its own twist. Target priority is one of the genre's hidden puzzles: the closest enemy is not always the most dangerous, and the loudest target is not always the smartest first shot. Every shooter contains at least one doorway that looked perfectly safe until it wasn't.

Tiny history break

Duck Hunt used Nintendo’s Zapper light gun, but the television did not 'see' where you pointed in the way a camera would. The console briefly flashed targets so the sensor could detect whether the aim lined up. The next fact has its own story: Early arcade shooting galleries predate video games by decades. Mechanical targets, light sensors and carnival-style ranges already turned accuracy into entertainment long before pixels arrived.
