Story gives facts somewhere to live. A location, character or mystery can make information easier to remember than the same detail presented alone. A related fact is worth keeping: Spelling games benefit from sound because hearing a word and seeing its letters connects two forms of information instead of asking memory to work alone. Kids' games often have the toughest design audience: players who will simply leave if the explanation becomes boring.

Something to tell a friend

Minecraft: Education Edition launched in 2016 and adapted the familiar block-building world for classrooms. Teachers have used the sandbox for subjects ranging from coding and chemistry to history and collaborative design. And for something completely different: Kid Pix was created in 1989 by Craig Hickman as a drawing program friendly enough for children to use. Its playful stamps, sounds and effects helped make digital art feel less like operating software and more like opening a box of crayons.
