Reader Rabbit began on early home computers in the 1980s and used colorful mini-games to make reading practice feel less like a worksheet. The player-facing version of the idea is simple: Story gives facts somewhere to live. A location, character or mystery can make information easier to remember than the same detail presented alone. Children are excellent software testers because they will click the button the designer was certain nobody would click.

One more thing

Typing games turn keyboard practice into reaction play. Repetition is still repetition, but adding score, speed and immediate feedback makes the same motor practice feel completely different. One more strange-but-useful detail: Children often learn vocabulary faster when words appear in meaningful contexts rather than isolated lists. Games naturally provide context because an object, action or character gives the word something to attach to.
