Driving & Racing Games · 10

Atari's Gran Trak 10 from 1974 is recognized by The Strong as the first arcade racing video game, complete with a steering wheel and gear lever. The player-facing version of the idea is simple. Time trials strip racing down to its purest argument: the opponent is a number, the track never moves, and every mistake belongs entirely to you. Every racing player eventually discovers a new unit of distance called 'I definitely had room.'

One strange fact

Roundabouts existed before cars became common. One of the earliest famous circular traffic plans was created around the Arc de Triomphe area in Paris during the nineteenth century. Another tiny history lesson: Rear-view mirrors were not standard on the earliest cars. Ray Harroun famously used one on his Marmon Wasp at the 1911 Indianapolis 500 instead of carrying a riding mechanic to watch behind.
