Arcade & Classic Games · 89
Arcade sound effects had to cut through real room noise, which helps explain why classic machines are full of short, sharp tones that remain recognizable decades later. The category's past supplies the companion fact: Asteroids used crisp vector graphics in 1979, drawing luminous lines instead of filling the screen with conventional pixel artwork. Classic games have tiny rulebooks and enormous opinions about timing.

A quick detour
Dragon's Lair arrived in 1983 using laserdisc video to display hand-drawn animation that looked far more like a cartoon than ordinary arcade graphics. The trade-off was that players had to react to tightly scripted moments rather than roam freely. And this deserves a place in the same trivia drawer: Track & Field became an arcade hit in 1983 by turning athletic events into furious button tapping. Players quickly discovered that technique applied not only to virtual athletes but also to protecting the cabinet from enthusiastic human hands.
