Galaga let captured fighters become part of the player's strategy: rescuing one could create a more powerful dual-fighter formation at the cost of a larger target. Meanwhile, the mechanics tell a second story: Lives systems create tension by making failure finite, while score systems give skilled players a reason to keep taking risks after survival alone becomes easy. The safest pattern works perfectly until the game becomes fast enough to expose that it was never safe.

This actually happened
Breakout was designed around the idea of Pong turned sideways and played against a wall of bricks. A tiny mechanical change created a completely different genre of game. One more curious detail: Dragon's Lair arrived in 1983 using laserdisc video to display hand-drawn animation that looked far more like a cartoon than ordinary arcade graphics. The trade-off was that players had to react to tightly scripted moments rather than roam freely.
