Q*bert used an isometric pyramid in 1982, making simple hopping controls look like movement through a strange three-dimensional toy. Another angle makes it more interesting: A score display gives failure a souvenir. The run ends, but the number remains as evidence that the next coin has a target. A flashing bonus object is the machine asking whether greed is stronger than survival instinct.

This actually happened

Breakout was designed around the idea of Pong turned sideways and played against a wall of bricks. A tiny mechanical change created a completely different genre of game. One more page from the weird history book: Galaxian and Galaga made enemy formations feel more alive by sending attackers diving out of formation. Suddenly the safe-looking pattern at the top of the screen could attack from unexpected angles.
