Early role-playing games often used random encounters partly because memory and storage limits made persistent visible enemy populations much harder to build. Environmental storytelling lets a room speak without dialogue. An abandoned camp, broken bridge or oddly placed skeleton can explain history before a character says a word. Side quests are what happen when saving the world has a surprisingly flexible deadline.

The rabbit hole
The word 'roguelike' comes from Rogue, a dungeon game first developed around 1980. Its randomly generated levels and high-stakes deaths inspired an entire family of games decades later. The next fact has its own story: Early computer RPGs often used graph paper because players had to draw their own dungeon maps. Getting lost was not a bug; keeping notes was part of the adventure.
