Virtua Fighter brought polygonal 3D fighters to arcades in 1993 and showed that readable martial-arts animation could work without 2D sprites. The design side has its own twist: Action games often place health pickups after stressful encounters, using level layout to create a tiny emotional release before the next problem appears. A parry is the game politely asking whether you would like to bet everything on one moment.

The curious bit
Final Fight began development as a sequel idea related to Street Fighter before becoming its own beat-'em-up. Game development history is full of projects that discovered what they really were halfway through. For the next piece of trivia: Combo counters turn uninterrupted success into spectacle. Instead of judging every hit separately, the game celebrates a sequence—and suddenly dropping the final input feels ten times worse.
