Yie Ar Kung-Fu helped popularize the idea of facing a sequence of visually distinct martial-arts opponents, each with a different style to learn. Meanwhile, the mechanics tell a second story: Fighting games turn distance into vocabulary. The same button can be brilliant, useless or suicidal depending on whether the opponent is one step closer. The strongest fighting-game move is often the one your opponent knows you are too nervous to use.

Something to tell a friend
Super Smash Bros. changed the usual fighting-game goal: damage increases knockback, and victory usually comes from launching opponents off the stage rather than draining a conventional life bar. A different kind of surprise: Beat-'em-up games such as Double Dragon made walking from left to right while fighting crowds into an arcade staple. The genre is sometimes called a 'brawler' for very obvious reasons.
