Invincibility frames temporarily make a character unhittable, turning a dodge into a timing problem rather than requiring the animation to physically clear every attack. One more layer: Action games often place health pickups after stressful encounters, using level layout to create a tiny emotional release before the next problem appears. Every dramatic finishing move begins with somebody being confident enough to press the risky button.

A quick detour

Jordan Mechner used video of his brother running and jumping as reference for the unusually fluid animation in 1989's Prince of Persia. Rotoscoping helped a tiny character move with a weight that many games of the era lacked. A different kind of surprise: Shenmue used the label 'Quick Timer Events' around 1999 for cinematic moments that demanded timely button presses. The phrase evolved into 'quick-time event', a mechanic that spread far beyond the original game.
