Recovery frames create commitment. A powerful move is interesting because the opponent gets a chance to answer if it misses. That connects nicely with a historical detail: Virtua Fighter brought polygonal 3D fighters to arcades in 1993 and showed that readable martial-arts animation could work without 2D sprites. The health bar becomes much more interesting when there is almost none of it left.

A small but excellent fact
Fighting games use 'footsies' as slang for careful control of distance and timing on the ground. Despite the silly name, it describes one of the most serious parts of high-level play. One more page from the weird history book: Platform action games often teach through level design instead of text. A safe obstacle appears first, then the same idea returns later with enemies, gaps or a timer attached.
