Virtua Fighter brought polygonal 3D fighters to arcades in 1993 and showed that readable martial-arts animation could work without 2D sprites. The design side has its own twist: Fighting games turn distance into vocabulary. The same button can be brilliant, useless or suicidal depending on whether the opponent is one step closer. The corner of a fighting arena contains no furniture and somehow still feels crowded.
