Spelling games benefit from sound because hearing a word and seeing its letters connects two forms of information instead of asking memory to work alone. Another angle makes it more interesting: Open-ended creation is educational in a different way from quizzes because there may be many successful answers and the player has to judge which one serves the goal best. Kids' games often have the toughest design audience: players who will simply leave if the explanation becomes boring.

History got weird here
Logo, the programming language famous for its turtle cursor, let children learn coding by giving simple movement commands. Drawing a square became an introduction to procedures and geometry. The next fact takes a different route: Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? turned geography into detective work. Players chased a fictional thief while learning countries, cities and landmarks almost by accident.
