Fun & Crazy Games · 19

Game jams encourage strange ideas because tiny deadlines make safe, enormous designs impossible; a joke mechanic can survive simply because there is no time to replace it. There is a practical reason this matters in games: Unpredictable physics works best when the rules are still consistent enough that the player can understand why the ridiculous result happened. Physics is a respected science until a rubber chicken enters the simulation.

The fun-history drawer

WarioWare, Inc. arrived in 2003 with 'microgames' that can last only a few seconds. Instead of learning one deep rule set, players rapidly decode tiny instructions before the game throws the next absurd task at them. The next fact has its own story: I Am Bread, released in 2015, gives individual control over the corners of a slice of bread. Turning breakfast into a climbing problem is exactly the sort of idea that sounds ridiculous until the toast reaches the ceiling fan.
