Zork grew from a mainframe adventure created by MIT programmers and later became one of Infocom's defining commercial text adventures. The player-facing version of the idea is simple: Loot systems make comparison into play. Two swords can differ by only a few numbers and still create five minutes of serious inventory philosophy. An unexplored patch of map can generate more curiosity than a treasure chest already sitting in front of you.

A little game-room trivia
The Legend of Zelda was designed around curiosity and exploration. Its creator has said childhood experiences exploring countryside and caves helped inspire the feeling of discovering something hidden. And for something completely different: The term 'NPC' means non-player character. It came from tabletop role-playing language and became so common that it is now understood far beyond RPGs.
