Adventure design often works by planting a locked answer early and letting the player carry the question around for hours before the right item or clue appears. A related fact is worth keeping: The Legend of Zelda launched in 1986 and mixed action, exploration, items and secrets into a structure that encouraged players to remember places they could not yet reach. Heroes can save kingdoms, but they will still open every cupboard in somebody else's house.

The fun-history drawer
Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy helped turn menu-driven Japanese RPG combat into a major console tradition during the 1980s, each creating series that continued for generations of hardware. A second fact changes the subject nicely: Quest logs solve a problem older role-playing games handled with notebooks. Before on-screen reminders became standard, forgetting what an NPC asked could mean wandering around until memory returned.
